孝字从教、从学。孝的涵义有三个层次:养、敬、顺。孝敬父母最基本的要做到奉养,核心的内容是敬,高层次、高境界是顺。《孝经》认为,孝对不同地位的人有不同的要求。地位高、权势大的人,其孝的外延更大一些,对社会所负的责任更重一些,"孝子不匮,永锡尔类。"
