Modality de dicto and modality de re are an important theoretical issue in modal logic. The paper starts with a discussion of Aristotle＇s modal theory and ends with a discussion of the modern modal predicate logic in order to expound the connection, difference and philosophical significance of modality de dicto and modality de re. It concludes that modal logic is a logic of essentialism.
