A. D. Hope is a very influential critic in the history of Australian lit- erary criticism. He put forward in many of his essays and articles published in the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s a series of important ideas on poetic ecology, poetry and critics. His thoughts on poetry criticism are unique in contemporary Australian literary circles. This paper examines three important aspects of Hope＇s poetics, including his perspectives on the ecology of poetry, poetry writing, and poetry criticism. It is argued that there is a close relationship between Hope＇s poetics and the construction of Australian literary canon.
