Henry James is a famous novelist and critic. The Portrait of a Lady, one of his early novels, realistic writing. However, through the analysis of its narrative techniques and characteristics of the novels, it can be clearly seen that the author made some modernistic innovations in this novel, in terms is a typical modernistic of narrative perspective and technique, as he changed the perspective into the heroine＇s inner world on one side. On the other side, he changed the focus of the novel from the plot into the depiction of characters. James made such new explorations into modernistic novels and thus made a great contribution to the development of modernism.
