An Analysis of the Semantics and Syntax of Chinese Middle Constructions

本文探讨汉语中间句的语义特征及其句法结构。就跨语言而论,并非每个语言都有典型的中间句结构;有的有,如英语;有的没有,如汉语。汉语中间句的特征成分属于形容词,与动词补语一起组成复杂的形容词谓语。理论解释如何来衔接,还需要再研究。

This paper investigates the semantics and syntax of Chinese middle constructions. From an across linguistic perspective, Chinese does not have the prototypical middle con- struction but has the related complex adjectival predicate instead,in which an easy-type of adjective takes a verbal complement. Similar adjectival predicates also exit in other languages like English, and the only difference between Chinese and English is that the former lacks a finite-nonfinite verbal system but the latter has it.
