The Reasons for Couplet Novels Flourishing in Early ROC

民初骈体小说创作繁盛的原因可以归结为四个方面:社会境遇方面,民国初年的政治文化环境使部分作家在失望之余沉浸于吟风弄月,他们选择骈体小说表现自己的情感体验;文学教育方面,清末民初的骈文教育和创作为骈体小说的创作和接受储备了潜在的作者和读者;创作实践方面,在文人心态的作用下,以徐枕亚为代表的一批作家将自己的生命情感融入创作之中,运用缠绵回环的语言体式构筑了富有感染力的文学世界,促成了创作和接受的良性互动;语言体式和美学品格方面,骈体小说特殊的语体建构了一种诗化小说的美学品格,满足了作者和读者的审美需求。

There are four reasons for the flourishing of couplet novels in early ROC. The first reason is that some novelists lost their hope for changing their political environment so they chose to write love stories to express themselves. The second reason is that the couplet prose had been widely accepted by intellectuals and this gave the chance to flourish writing and reading of couplet novels. The Third reason is that some brilliant novelists, especially Xu Zhenya, could create a very impressive imaginary world with beautiful words which makes couplet novels attractive. The forth reason is that the special style of couplet novels exhibited unique aesthetic taste which could satisfy the reader＇s aesthetic needs.
