China's Higher Education in a Dilemma:Where to Go?

大学是诗意栖居,是精神家园。中国改革三十年来,最值得反思的是高等教育。当前中国高等教育存在十大困境:理念与现实的困境、学校与政府的困境、学校与社会的困境、教师与学生的困境、教学与科研的困境、教育理论与教育实践的困境、自主权与体制的困境、师道与官商之道的困境、腐败的学校与学校的腐败的困境、中学与西学的困境。

University should be a poetic dwelling and spiritual home for human beings.However,during the past 30 years of reform and opening-up,higher education in China has been the least satisfactory sector.At present,China's higher education is facing ten conflicts:the conflict between ideal and reality,between schools and government,between schools and society,between faculty and students,between teaching and research,between educational theory and practice,between autonomy and control,between teaching ethics and doctrines of businessmen or public servants,between corrupt schools and corruption in schools,between Chinese scholarship and Western learning.These ten conflicts are merely problems concerning schools per se,but to resolve these problems is extremely difficult.Even so,as raising a question is more important than resolving it,we should still 'try our utmost though the odds are against us'.
