Through aclose reading of Peter Zumthor＇s tactics in designing the gneiss stone wall of the Thermal Bath at Vals,this paper traces back the critical steps where matter has lost its charm in both metaphysics and architecture.By emphasizing the intertwining efforts of craftsmanship and nature in the materiality of building,this paper learms from Zumthor＇s project,treating building materials and cladding not as senseless signs but as sensible dialogues between culture and nature.
