Gothic novels, tales of the macabre and supernatural, were very popular around the eighteenth century, but were disregarded by the Western critic circle for its focus on bizarre,picturesque settings and plots. However, the research into Gothic novels has become widely concerned nowadays and we should bear it in mind that the Gothic novels have huge influence on the latter development of literature and the value of Gothic novels must not be underestimated.
