TANG Ting-shu had been a comprador in the British Jardine Matheson for ten years in his early life, and accumulated substantial assets and experience of operating modern business. Later he set up and ran Merchants Steam Navigation Company and Kaiping Mining Bureau, two large-scale commercial enterprises during the Westernization Movement, and made remarkable achievements.
