An innovative technology for sulphuric acid production using high-grade SO2 developed by Bayer leclanology Services, QUASI-Isothermal Kontact process BAYQIK, is described with respects to its theoretical fundamental, reactor structure, model development, piloting and implementation to a lead smelting process. BAYQIK process is characterized by a multi-tube fixed-bed reactor, in which commercially available catalysts are placed inside the tubes, with a cooing medium flowing outside tubes. The heat produced during exothermic reactions is continuously dissipated in a way that the catalyst temperature is always underneath the allowable maximum, even with higher than 50 vol. % SO2 inlet concentration. BAYQIK process offers a variety of economic and process benefits, including the reduction of both capital investment and operating expenses. These benefits can be achieved to the same extent for revamp projects for capacity enhancement as well as for completely new plants.
