Subterranean City:The Introduction of Pedway in Chicago

Pedway为芝加哥地下步行系统。这个始建于1951年的庞大系统提供了一个不受天气和机动车干扰的舒适、安全的步行空间;同时结合步行沿线地下空间资源,形成了集中交通、办公与商业等功能的地下综合体,被称为芝加哥"地下城"。本文试图从Pedway的历史沿革、物理空间、规划体系以及政策法规等方面来诠释这一地下空间开发利用的成功案例。

Pedway, which developed in 1951, is a huge underground walking system throughout Downtown Chicago. It not only provides a safe and comfortable walking space by protecting pedestrians from bad weather and high-speed traffic in and around Downtown Chicago, but also acts as a linear connection of public and private buildings in Downtown Chicago and creates a multi-functional underground complex. The underground complex, named as ＂Subterranean City＂, includes transportation, business, office and other fhnctions. This article introduces this successful system from its history, physical environment, planning system and policies.
