《野草在歌唱》表现的是殖民地白人生活,小说叙述总是聚焦于矛盾,和殖民权力话语形成对峙关系的是日常化的现实生活。小说先后聚焦于托尼、玛丽与迪克,这三个人物就像三个楔子,直指殖民话语的矛盾处,揭示了殖民文化价值标准的双重性、殖民价值观念与现实生活规则的冲突所造成的殖民地白人对自我文化身份的质疑和主体意识的混乱。

The Grass Is Singing displayed the White＇s life in the colony. The novel always focused on the contradiction. It was the daily actual life that came into being the confrontation with colonial discourse. The novel successively focused on Tony, Mary and Dick. These three personages were just like three wedges which directed at the contradiction of colonial discourse. The novel has announced the White＇s question of their self--identity of culture and confusion of subject consciousness on account of the conflict between the duplicity of colonized culture value standard, colonize values and actual life regulation in the colony.
