The present paper first examines the traditional linguistic approach to metaphor and then turns to cognitive approach to metaphor. The focus is on the influences of Aristotle and Black on the most prominent models of metaphor comprehension： Ortony＇ s salience imbalance model, Gentner＇ s structure-mapping model, Glucksberg ＆ Keysar＇ s property attribution model and Lakoff＇ s theory of conceptual metaphor.
