OUTLINE/Lyric Opera of Chicago presented Ernani for the first and only time 25 years ago,so its return to the repertoire this season was an event that cheered admirers of this rip-roaring early Verdi work.Such were the glories of the music that audiences weren't likely to be bothered by a preposterous plot(based on a Victor Hugo tragedy) filled with archetypes more than flesh-and-blood characters.Each of the four principal singers was given grand opportunities for full-throttle vocalism that the Lyric's worthy cast,a roster of the walking wounded,delivered with gusto in the handsome new production that opened at the Civic Opera House.
