桂林丰富多元的文化是历史建构的结果。广泛流传于桂林各地的广福王信仰产生于北宋在西南边疆大力开拓的时期,朝廷通过赐封地方神灵而渗透国家观念。明清时期,知识精英加以弘扬和传播,并被社会各阶层所接受和再创造,出现了国家与知识精英(包括师公)、商人、社会各阶层复杂的互动关系,从而形成一种地方文化。广福王信仰的兴起和传播,其实是桂林的开发和周边不同族群、不同文化被纳入主流话语的见证。

The diverse culture of Guilin is the result of historic development.The faith in King Guangfu which is prevalent in Guilin originated in Northern Song dynasty when the central government developed the southwestern part of the country and appointed local deities in order to arm the people with an awareness of the ＂nation＂.In the Ming and Qing dynasties,the intellectuals developed and spread such awareness which was then accepted and innovated by other social strata,resulting in a complicated interaction between the nation and the various social strata including intellectuals,businessmen and so on.The emergence and spread of the faith in King Guangfu is actually a witness of Guilin＇s development and the incorporation of periphery cultures of different ethic groups into the mainstream culture.
