Red mud is a waste of alumina production, the composition of which is extremely complex. This paper makes a detailed introduction to the phase composition, chemical composition and the nature of red mud, and points out that the red mud can purify the air and water pollutants and can repair the soil contaminated by heavy metals based on some special natures of red mud, and its application in building materials and the recovery of metal, non-metallic elements from red mud have good economic, environmental and social benefits.
