On Lin Yutang's Cultural Nostalgia and Cultural Identity

林语堂用英文创作了大量的小说、传记、随笔,向海外读者介绍中国传统文化。把文化乡愁具体落实在对中国社会的描写,对中国文化的传播上,使之成为文化使者,更有了文化"根"的意识。林语堂认为中国古代以儒家世俗思想为主体,以道家的遁世与佛教向往天国的神学理论为补充的思想结构,适应了中国传统社会的需要,也代表着中国文化。

Ling Yutang has introduced to the overseas readers the traditional Chinese culture through his own novels, biographies and essays which were written in English. Living abroad has increased his cultural nostalgia which has led to his direct description of the Chieses society and his pursuit of the spread of the Chinese culture. Being an ambassador of the Chinese culture, he was aware of his cutlural root. He belived that the Chinese culture has combined both the thoughts of Taoism and the Buddhism which has satisfied the needs of the Chinese society, and we should take advantage of the Western culture and inherit our own excellent and traditional culture at the same time.
