This paper is a review of studies on carnitine,discussing its discovery and chemistry its physiological function and its application as food additive、feed additive and its pharmacological uses.At the same time,it examples various methods of synthesis including direct extraction,resolution of the D,L carnitine racemate,transforming from carnitine derivatives and asymmetric syntheses.
