The levels of the blood sugar and insulin were detected from 78 cases newborns with critical illness. Results: 74% critical newborns have the hyperglycemia and 67% have the hyperinsulinemia; a Positive correlation were found between blood sugar and insulin levels with the illness. Following the improvement of the patients' condition, both blood sugar and insulin level return to normal. We suggest that close monitoring of blood sugar and insulin level be an useful index for judging the prognosis
