For a long time literature has been dominated by men and become a dictatorial weapon to carry out their cultural values. Before 1840, female literature took on an appearance of no tradition. This paper is targeted at exploring the nameless pain of the development of female literature in Victorian Era from two aspects: first, the extraordinary range and diversity of English women novelists were reduced and condensed to a tiny band of the great female writers and all theories of female writers were derived from them ; second, male critics tended to project and expand their own culture bound stereotypes of femininity and executed double critical standards upon female writers.
