Cai Lie and his Influence on Zhangzhou in the Ming Dynasty

明朝正德嘉靖年间龙溪硕儒蔡烈栖居于鹤鸣山白云洞(今称云洞岩)长达近半个世纪,潜心研学讲学,以卓然有守的慧识、人品、德行名扬远近。他学宗朱熹,学养丰厚,注重躬行。在漳州传播朱子学,吸引诸多学者、官宦、社会贤达前来论道问学,促进了漳州地方文化对外交流,大大丰富了云洞岩的人文底蕴。其学行对漳州地方社会乃至闽南曾产生积极影响。

Cai Lie, a scholar in Longxi （the ancient name for Zhangzhou） in the reign of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty, lived, studied and taught in Baiyun Cave, Heming Hill （the ancient name for Yundong Rock） for nearly half a century, well-known for his wis- dom, personality and morality. He promoted Zhangzhou＇s foreign cultural exchange and enriched her humane connotation by spreading Zhu Xi＇s thoughts and discussing with many scholars, officials and public celebrities who were attracted to Zhanghou by his fame. Cai Lie＇s academic activities once exerted positive effects on Minnan District.
