On the Purpose,Nature and Principles in Translating Traditional Chinese Philosophical Classics

本文以全球文化和谐平等相处为出发点,深入讨论中国哲学典籍英译的目的、性质与原则等根本性问题,认为其目的既要保持中国文化个性,维护民族文化身份,又要促进互镜与互竞,建构全球文化多元化。其性质是促进世界各种文化平等和谐相处、共同发展的跨文化传播与交流活动。其英译原则应该是保持文化个性,力求形神兼备,减少文化亏损;平衡语用效果。

This paper makes explorations of some essential issues in the translating of traditional Chinese classics, such as its purpose, nature and principles. The purpose is, on the basis of having an appropriate knowledge of the value of Chinese culture, to maintain the cultural individuality and cultural identity on one hand, and on the other, to promote the mutual - mirroring and competition between Chinese culture and other ones so as to construct the cultural diversity of the world; its nature is a cross - cultural spreading and communicative activity that contributes to the equal and harmonious coexistence and common development; while its translating principle should be maintaining the cultural individualities, trying hard to manage the unity of form and essence, keeping cultural deficiency to the least extent, and balancing the pragmatic effect.
