It is reported in this paper that red ZnS∶Sm, Cl thin film electroluminescent devices using ceramic thick film as insulator layer (CTFEL) have been manufactured firstly. The transparent electrode is ZnO doped with Al made by sputtering and the emitting layer is ZnS∶Sm, Cl which made by electric evaporation method. The electroluminescent spectrum of CTFEL device and the dependence of brightness on voltage were measured. The CTFEL device was driven under 50Hz and the maximum luminance is 18 4cd/m 2.
