Objective To investigate the value of spontaneous general movements ( GMs) in the assessment of neonatal brain damage, particularly of cerebral palsy. Methods The qualitative and quantitative changes in GMs were assessed by using a video system in 18 newborns who had been followed up for two years. Results Out of the 18 newborns, 7 developed normally and 11 had cerebral palsy. The score of GMs in normal neonates divided by their neourological outcomes (12.3±1.1) was significantly higher than that of abnormal cases (8.4± 1.0, P <0.01). The Apgar score at 5 minutes was positively correlated with the GMs score. It was shown that the predictive value of GMs assessment was similar to that of neuroimage and better than neurological examination. Conclusion The GMs assessment is a useful method to determine the degree of brain damage and cerebral palsy.
