Cities of the Plain,the third novel of Border Trilogy,depicts the lives by the sweat of two young cowboys in the Southwest of America and Mexico,and love tragedy between the cowboy and a prostitute.The female character plays a second role and acts as a mere appendix to the man in the novel.So under the framework of man-centered society system,it is obvious that the female is demanded to forget herself,refuse herself,or deny herself in a certain way.This thesis will analyze the circumstances of female,the position of ＂the other＂,self choice and breaking out by using Simone de Beauvoir＇s existential view on women.
