英汉习语中文化负载词的翻译策略:异化和归化

On foreignization and domestication from translation of culturally-loaded words in English and Chinese idioms

习语作为各民族语言的精华,具有浓郁的文化特征,反映了该民族对客观世界的认知、对人类自身的认识、对生活经验的看法。因此,翻译已不再被看作仅仅是不同语言之间"语言符号的转换",而是一种"文化转换"。本文通过对英汉习语中文化负载词翻译的对比,探讨了在翻译中应针对不同的翻译目的,灵活运用异化或归化的翻译策略处理英汉习语互译,以达到译语读者的不同要求,从而促进文化交流。

Idioms, which have heavy characteristics of cultures, can embody the cognition of the objective world, the knowledge of its populace, and the viewpoints of life experience for any people. Hence, translation itself can be viewed as not only ＂transfer between different language codes＂, but ＂transfer between cultures＂. Through a contrastive study of translation of culturally-loaded words in English and Chinese idioms, the article attempts to answer the question as to how to deal with the culturally-loaded words in idioms. According to different translation purposes, the translation should either foreignize or domesticate them so as to meet different needs of readers of target language and to promote mutual communication of cultures.
