English Modal Satellite Adverbs and Construction of Indirect Speech Acts

本文探讨了英语情态卫星副词这一新概念的来源、意义及所包括的类型,说明它们在构建间接言语行为时能起到言外之力及言后效果的作用。通过对公共演讲、新闻采访、学术写作以及法律条文四种语类的语料考查,发现英语情态卫星副词的分布类型及比例不同,进而说明语篇类型性质不同,所构建的间接言语行为有异。

This paper explores the source,significance and classification of the new concept ＂English modal satellite adverb＂ and indicates that the use of English modal satellite adverbs can result in illocutionary force and perlocutionary effects. The investigation of the corpora of four genres,namely,public speeches,journalistic interviews,academic writings,and laws regulations shows that English modal satellite adverbs are distributed differently in numbers and types in them. The results prove that text types are much related to the types of indirect speech acts constructed.
