Tang Shouqian and the Preparation for Constitutionalism in the Late Qing Dynasty

汤寿潜是晚清民初著名的思想家和立宪派,是绅商的代表人物之一。在清末预备立宪运动中,汤寿潜与张謇、郑孝胥等绅商名流参与其间,积极策动清廷预备立宪,关注官制改革,参与发动、组织国会请愿运动,对清末立宪运动的兴起和发展起了重要作用。但是由于清政府在立宪问题的延误,汤寿潜对清廷渐生离意。武昌起义后,汤寿潜从权应变,由立宪走向共和。

Tang Shouqian, a well-known thinker and constitutionalist, was one of exponents of Shenshang in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. In the preparation for constitutionalism in the late Qing Dynasty, Tang Shouqian dealt with other Shenshang worthies such as Zhang Jian and Zheng Xiaoxu. He engineered the preparation for constitutionalism, paid close attention to bureaucracy reform and participated in mobilizing and organizing parliament petition and so on. What he did played an important role in the rise and development of Constitutional Movement in the late Qing Dynasty. But the temporizing of Qing Dynasty on the constitutionalism produced his rejection. According to the variable situation after the Wuchang Uprising, he turned into a republican from a constitutionalist.
