Lin Yutang’s Thoughts on Modern Dialectology

林语堂先生的论作《研究方言应有的几个语言学观察点》发表于1924年。其中所倡导的现代方言学观可概括为"独立观、系统观、递变观、科学观"。融汇东西方的智慧、对祖国语言文化的挚爱是其产生的思想基础,该方言学观对现代方言学研究产生巨大而深远的影响。

Mr. Lin Yutang＇s paper ＂Some Linguistic Viewpoints in Dialect Research＂ was published in 1924, in which he initiated the modem concept of dialect study that can be summarized as ＂independent view, systematic, graded, and scientific concepts＂. Leaming from the wisdom of the East and the West and a love of the native language were his ideological foundation. Thus his thoughts on the modem dialectology have a great and far-reaching impact on dialect studies.
