This paper begins with a challenge to Conrad's own opinions on the "artistic unity" and "three stages of life" in his sea fiction. Then it points out that The Shadow Line, which is a record of a young man of acute self-awareness and growing moral duty, should be regarded as the final part of Conrad's sea stories concerning with age, personality and moral maturity. By looking into the mirror and writing diaries, the young protagonist and narrator in The Shadow Line, finally finds his own self and is able to face death on the sea with courage. The sea thus becomes a mirror to reflect the narrator's self-awareness.
