Objective To examine the time efficiency and accuracy of an intelligent temperature system (ITS), and to lay foundation for automation of clinical nursing. Methods An ITS was designed in accordance with rules in authoritative regulatory document, and six virtual patients' information of body temperature for three consecutive days was created. Twenty nursing undergraduates from two academic levels collected and filled these patients' information on standard temperature sheets in a laboratory setting by using the traditional manual approach and the ITS approach. The time spent on documentation and output errors were recorded. Results Significant differences were found between the manual and the ITS approach in respect of performance time, and error counts and obliteration counts (P〈0.01 for all). The visual effect of the Body temperature sheets produced by the two approaches were impressive. The errors were found in documentation of body temperature, pulse, breath, blood pressure, defecation, physical methods for lowering body temperature, input and output, marking, renewal of temperature sheets, and postsurgical days. As for the manual approach, the error rates in documentation, rates of inappropriate documentation, and rates of obliteration between students from the two academic levels had significant differenees(P〈0.01 for all). Conclusion The ITS approach to collect data and then to generate temperature sheets is very effective in shortening the performance time and the occurrence of errors. This is of significance for the reduction of nursing workload and for the improvement of quality of temperature sheets.
