A Comparative Study of Themes in Chinese and English Scientific Reports

通过对20个汉英科技报道进行语篇对比分析研究,探讨汉英科技报道中主位类型和主位推进模式存在的异同。汉英科技报道都大量使用话题主位,较少使用语篇主位和人际主位。在分离主位、有标记主位和句项主位等的使用上,汉英科技报道存在显著差异。汉英科技报道中常见的主位推进模式有平行型、延续型、集中型和交叉型四种,其中使用最多的是平行型主位推进模式。在延续型和交叉型主位推进模式的使用上,汉英科技报道存在明显差异。

Through discourse analysis and comparison of twenty Chinese and English scientific reports, this paper tries to find out the similarities and differences of theme and thematic progression between Chinese and English scientific reports. Most themes in both Chinese and English scientific reports are topical themes,while thematic theme and interpersonal theme are seldom used. There is a great difference between Chinese and English scientific reports in the use of displaced themes, marked themes and clause themes, etc. There are commonly four types of thematic progression in Chinese and English scientific reports,i, e. parallel type,linear type, cluster type and intersecting type, and the first type is most widely - used in both Chinese and English scientific reports. There is a big difference between Chinese and English scientific reports in the use of linear and intersecting thematic progression.
