Abstract: LIN Yu-tang started his writing career abroad since 1936 when he left Shanghai. He was very famous in America due to series of best sellers such as My Country and My People, The Importance of Living, and Moment in Peking. But early in 1927, Lin started writing English essays, some of which were first published in China, later in America. By comparing the differences in dealing cultural content between two versions of the same essay or book, this paper tends to discuss LIN's different strategies in different contexts and readerships and its significance for present Chinese foreign literature, Chinese-English translation and crossculture research. Finally, contrary to YIN Xiaohuang's conclusion in Chinese American Literature since the 1850s, the author draws the different conclusion that the differences between the two versions in China and America of his work lie mainly in writing skill, not in subject matter.
