A Comparison of Yan Fu's and Fukuzawa yukitsi's Views on the Western Thoughts

严复和福泽谕吉都处在国家面临西方冲击、需要克服封建主义的危机、争取民族独立的历史转型期。他们虽然接受了西方不同思想和学说,但是能够根据中日两国具体国情的差别而选择有利于自身环境的学说,进而影响所在国家,以使各自的国家脱离原有的旧体系,回应整个西方世界的冲击,走上近代化的国富民强的道路。

As famous philosophers in China and Japan, both Yan Fu and Fukuzawa yukitsi had to face the social transformation periods of fierce attacks from the West, crisis in the feudal societies and struggles for national independence in the two countries. Though they accepted thoughts and theories popular in the West, they were able to select and introduce those that were suitable to the specific situations in China and Japan at that time. The introduction of these theories had deep influences and forwarded the two countries to break away from old social system, respond to attacks from the West and begin a modern road to realize national prosperity.
