现代文明带来的正面效应有目共睹,负面效应也无法避讳,反现代性也就成为中国现代作家的一种合理选择。迟子建大部分小说秉承的就是一种反现代性立场。这尤其表现于她对现代城市文明的全面批判中,她的小说往往把现代城市视为引人堕落的罪恶之地。长篇小说《额尔古纳河右岸》展示了现代文明对少数民族的自然家园和民族传统的全方面破坏过程,更是迟子建的反现代性立场巅峰之作。
