Abstract There is an increasing interest in applying xylanase to the pulp bleaching process to reduce the amounts of chlorine used in bleaching processes as well as improve the quality of pulp produced.Cellulase may also be used for the improvement of pulp property,such as to enhance drainage. Aspergillus niger An 76 was isolated to produce xylanase (350 IU/ml).When the enzyme was used to treat the Kraft pulp, a brightness of 6.8% more than that of the untreated one using the same chlorine dosage,or a saving of nearly 50% of chlorine consumption with the same brightness,was realized. When the enzyme was used to treat bleached wheat straw pulps,an obvious improvement of breaking length,drainage,viscosity and fragility of the pulp was obtained.This gives the hope that the high grade paper may be produced by this technique from agricultural residues instead of wood.This is very important for ecosystem protection in a world view,and is important for economic balance in the forest inadequate countries such as China. An alkali tolerant strain of Pseudomonas was also isolated from soil and used for xylanase production.Under the optimal conditions, Pseudomonas sp.G6 2 can produce more than 300 IU/ml xylanase.The alkali tolerant property of the enzyme is suitable for using in pulp industry.Comparison of the treatment results between the two kinds of xylanases,the bacterial xylanase is superior to the fungal xylanase in improving fragility.However,it is in reverse order in increasing strength property (breaking length).
