The sex pheromone, 2,6 dichlorophenol (2,6 DCP), in foveal glands of nymphs; unfed, attached and engorged adults of Haemaphysalis longicornis were detected by GC. 2,6 DCP only existed in adults and was undetectable in nymphs. Males produced 2,6 DCP only during the feeding period, but the quantity was very low (about 1ng/ind.) and its biological role was unclear. The biosynthesis of 2,6 DCP of females occured on the 4th—5th day after moulting from nymphs. Later, it increased continuously and reached a peak (11 12ng/ind.) just before and afer feeding. On the third day after feeding, it began to decline, but maintained at a relatively stable level. This phenomenon implied that the release and new biosynthesis of 2,6 DCP took place during this period. On the 6th—7th day, it declined significantly and no 2,6 DCP existed i n foveal glands after engorgement
