Weekly Review was defined as 'a non-revolutionary journal' before the 1990s and later it was praised as 'one of the main positions for propagating Marxism.' The sharp contrast in its appraisal was rooted in the absence of a reasonable criterion of evaluation. In the view of this paper, we should see whether it was 'progressive' rather than whether it was 'revolutionary' when we evaluate the journals published in the period of May Fourth Movement. Weekly Review was a progressive journal in the May Fourth period and its progressiveness was embodied in its concern with Marxism.
