摘要
文章首先对EPON（以太网无源光网络）和GPON（吉比特无源光网络）两种技术的发展应用及演进方向进行了详细介绍。通过对两种技术的全面比较分析，得出两种技术必将共存于未来的接入网中，EPON和GPON发展的最佳策略是走向融合。下一代PON（无源光网络）系统xPON，应该是一个充分兼容现有GPON和EPON网络的超高速PON网络平台，能同时向10GEPON和10GGPON平滑演进。代表着PON网络的发展方向。
