Modernity of Chinese Buddhism and Its Tendency

"现代性"是当代一种重要的文化力量和学术解析方式。在历史上,中国佛教正是通过对"自身"的当下性进行一种现代性的超越而得以从历史走进现代的。也正是在这种当下性的超越中,中国佛教表现出越来越多的现代性元素。今天,"现代性"也是一种促进社会文化进行现代性转型的话语力量。在其作用下,中国传统佛教的现代性走向面临着多重学术力量的挑战和压力。现代性的学术话语正在促进中国佛教的现代转型,推动着中国佛教走向国际化。中国传统佛教也因之将最终完成其现代性的转型。

Modernity represents an important cultural force and academic analytic device. In history, the Chinese Buddhism stepped into the contemporary era through its modernistically transcending its own presentness. It is in such a transcending that more and more modernity of the Chinese Buddhism was revealed. At present, modernity proved to he a power of speech, which is accelerating the modernistic transformation of society and culture. Obviously, due to the power of modernity, the traditional Buddhism of China is confronted with academic challenge and pressure. A modernistic mode of expression is facilitating the Chinese Buddhism mutation and internationalization. Eventually, it will turn into a modernistic religion in step with modernity.
