Study of Young John Allen's Translation and His Discourse on Translation

本文从翻译学的角度研究林乐知从事翻译的缘起和动机、与华人合译的翻译方式、其鲜为人知的译论文章《新名词之辨惑》。《新名词之辨惑》体现了林乐知独特且明确的翻译观。他认为,翻译中遇到的一种语言相对于另一种语言的明显的词汇匮乏,是源于人心不得释放,新学不得发展。林乐知从文化的视角分析译名问题,使其成为继傅兰雅之后又一位对中国译论做出贡献的近代来华传教士。

This paper studies the causes and motives of Young John Allen＇s engaging in translation,his ways of translation with Chinese collaborators and his discussion on translation in his Uncovering Delusions on New Terms,which,though remained quite unknown to the public for a long while,clearly shows Allen＇s unique views on translation.He held that it was the constraint of people＇s souls and of new learning that led to the vocabulary shortage of one language in comparison with another.He studied terminology translation from the perspective of culture,and made himself another missionary after John Fryer who had contributed to Chinese translation theory.
