On Edna’s Transformation Process in The Awakening from Theme System Perspective

借助韩礼德语篇功能中对语篇发展最重要的主位系统,对美国女作家凯特.肖邦的小说《觉醒》中主人公埃德娜从被动接受她的传统角色到主动与此作斗争的转变过程进行分析。通过对埃德娜不同觉醒阶段的主位分析,得出不同阶段的语言特征,是揭示主人公从被动麻木到积极采取行动的转变过程的有力依据。文章指出,主位系统不仅能成功地说明人物的变化过程;同时为小说的美学与文学意义提供并赋予更深的内涵。

This paper makes an analysis of the transformation process of Edna, the heroine in Kate Chopin＇s The Awakening, from the point of accepting her traditional role passively to fighting against it actively in terms of M. A. K Halliday＇s Theme system which is the most significant factor in the development of discourse. Taking a close examination of linguistic features at Edna＇s different stages of awakening, the paper demonstrates that Halliday＇s Theme system can function as a useful tool in revealing a character＇s transformation from passivity to activity. The study also concludes that transitivity analysis effectively sheds fresh insight into the aesthetic effects and the literary significance of literary works under study.
