Objective To explore the correlation between thoracolumbar vertebral fracture following low energy trauma and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women, and provide basis for the prevention and treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral fracture with osteoporosis. Methods 144 female patients aged from 40 to 58 years who sustained thoraeolumbar vertebral fracture following low energy trauma and 146 females at similar age without fracture history as control group were studied. DXA (Dual X -ray Absorptiometry) was used to measure BMD in the distal left femoral, then these data were used for statistical analysis. Results Thoracolumbar vertebral fracture group had a significantly lower BMD than control group. The detection rate of osteoporosis(OP) were 34. 03% and 12.32% in thoracolumbar vertebral fracture group and control group, respectively. Conclusion Thoracolumbar vertebral fracture in 40 - 58 aged women caused by low energy injury were closely associated with their BMD. It is necessary to pay more attention to the change of BMD and the prevention of thoraeolumbar vertebral fracture in postmenopausal women.
