Objective To study the anatomical relation between Zuckerkandl's tubercle (ZT) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and the superior parathyroid (SP) glands. Methods 153 patients ( 121 thyroid cancer and 32 benign diseases) underwent total thyroidectomy from May 2008 to February 2009 were included in our study. We investigated the ZT s presence or absence, size and association with the RLN and SP. Results ZT was identified in most patients. Among them, 88.2% (135/153) were found on right, 82.4% (90/95) on left and 76.5% (102/108) were found to be bilateral. The RLN was mainly located between the ZT and the main body of the thyroid and 91.7 % on right (99/108) and 94.7 % on left (90/95). 94.4% of SP were located on the top of ZT at 10 or 11 o'clock position and 92.6% at about 1 or 2 o'clock position. Conclusions There was an important anatomical relationship between ZT and RLN and SP.
