美国高等教育史的撰写迄今已有300多年的历史。从最初的业余校友撰史到专业史学家的研究,高等教育史作为一个研究领域在美国正式确立。而后,伴随着社会的发展和学术的演进,美国高等教育史学经历了进步史学、和谐史论、修正史学和后修正时代几个阶段。就未来的发展趋势而言,学术研究的整合与深化将是美国高等教育史学的努力方向。

American higher education historiography has a history of more than three hundred years. As a specific research field, the history of higher education had been established in the evolution from amateurish alumni to professional historians. Then along with the development of American society and scholarship, American higher education historiog- raphy has experienced several periods from progressive to consensus history, and revisionist to post-revisionist era. Consolidation and deepening are the trends of American higher education historiography.
