Further Reflections on a Few Hot Issues in Contemporary Translation Studies

本文提出:需要重新诠释原文和译文之间关系,重新评估译者权限,重新认识"翻译"和"翻译研究"所涉范围。笔者认为,可将跨语言、跨文化的翻译行为分为严格意义的翻译和宽泛意义的翻译。译者在从事严格意义的翻译时,只能有限度地彰显其主体性;只有在从事宽泛意义的翻译时,译者的主体性才能得到较充分发挥。笔者指出,翻译研究可分为内部研究和外部研究,但两者没有主次之分。笔者呼吁翻译研究者明确划定各自的研究范围,说明其译文属性。为了更全面地认识翻译的本质属性,各翻译理论流派需要和谐共生,多元互补。

This paper probes into a few hot issues in contemporary translation studies. The author argues that care should be taken to re-explain the relationship between ST and TT, re-assess the power of the translator and redefine the the scope of ＂translation ＂and translation studies. The paper classifies translation into two categories, namely, translation in the narrow sense and translation in the broad sense. When engaging in the former activity, the translator can have limited freedom. Only when the translator engages in the latter activity can he enjoy more freedom. The author argues that translation researchers should define the scope of their study and that the translator should make known the category of his translated text. Translation studies can be divided into the inner circle and the outer circle, and both of them are equally important. Different schools of translation studies should co-exist in harmony and be tolertant of each other.
