The so-called Three Gorges Region refers to the area to the east of Sichuan Basin, which was the zone along the Yangtze River in Chongqing Municipality and the west of Hubei Province. The archaeological discoveries in recent years revealed the plentiful and diversified ancient cultures in this region, especially the mutual influences between the Ba and Chu Cultures during the Eastern Zhou Peri- od. With the reference of the historic literatures, the researches on the remains of Chu Culture could concretely explain the relationship between Ba and Chu States in the Eastern Zhou Period. The tradi- tional opinion was that the western border of Chu Culture was in Badong County and the Wushan Mountains were the boundary of the Ba and Chu States; however, the remains of Chu Culture recently found in the Three Gorges Region clearly showed that in the middle Warring-States Period, the Chu people had reached present-day Yunyang and Zhongxian Counties. The changes of the relationship between the Ba and Chu States were decided by political intentions and economic interests.
