Translating Implicit Intertextual Themes in Tea Classics via Explicitation

茶典籍文本的互文主题集中体现于茶著共同的思想内涵上,即通过饮茶活动修身养性,促进人与自然的和谐统一。这一主题含而不露地隐蕴于茶著的字里行间,文本语言编码表现为简约化、含义化和隐喻化。如果仅照字面翻译,目标语读者难以领悟作者的意图和文化暗示。"内隐外化"是一个将原文中的语言及信息化隐为显的策略,即采取变通方法将隐匿的深层文化内涵"外化"到语符表层,以助目标语读者的理解欣赏,从而更有效地传播优秀的中国传统茶文化。

The intertextual theme of Chinese tea classics is seen from their ideological ideas, namely, cultivating oneself and promoting harmony between man and nature via tea. Such a theme is generally implicit between the lines in tea classics with highly concise, implied, metaphoric and symbolic language. Literal translation of such themes is likely to render the target readers into confusion or misunderstanding as to the author＇s intention and cultural suggestions. To help the target readers understand and appreciate these tea classics, a translation strategy ＂externalization＂ is recommended, which will make the implicit messages into the explicit ones by means of visualizing, interpreting or decoding the culturally obscure content in deep structure up to the surface level. This is to make the versions of Chinese tea classics more readable so as to promote the traditional Chinese tea culture.
