Relying on reason and upholding morality,American deism bears a certain influence on Hawthorn＇s literary creation.In The Scarlet Letter,inspired by deism,Hawthorne affirms that God knows and is merciful,human beings are worthy and should pursue happiness.He faces up to the sin of human beings through the perspective of humanism,putting forward that human beings can achieve salvation through virtue,so as to free all the human beings from the despair and horror of Puritanism.
